WINTERSLEEP

A Game of Drums [Behind the Scenes]

A week ago we were all simultaneously “creeping” on Jud’s Facebook page and saw that he had shared a version of We three Kings we did about 10 years ago. We had 2 thoughts:

Thought A: “Holy crap, have we been a band for 10 years?”

Thought B: “Christmas songs are pretty cool.”

All of the sudden we were wearing elf clothes and an immense, immeasurable, unbearable, unstoppable giddy urge to do work came over us. We headed to the jam space. When we arrived, there were loads of candy canes and presents and a tree for some reason, and the place was immaculately clean [a true miracle], and a few reindeer and elves were hanging out. “Prancer!” Paul shouted the only way one can shout when one sees Prancer, gleefully & at the top of his lungs. “You a-lookin’ for a little… help? Word travels so-fast!” Prancer replied emphatically, “The original is so lame. Like where’s the beat?” Rudolph pondered aloud throwing Loel a pair of drum sticks, eyeing him like a headlight. Loel understood at once and began to erupt in a beat so thunderous & psychedelic that T Leary appeared for approximately 5 seconds in the frosty windowpane periphery. After “the strange & timely haze vision” dissipated, Rudolph quickly set up some mics while Paul and Tim sorted out guitar parts and googled lyrics. Jon smiled from a distance, and drank a cup of rum and eggnog in something not so far removed from ecstasy.

Hours later all the drums and vocals and guitars were finally done. Loel & Paul worked on the bass. The track was sounding phat. All it needed was sleigh bells and a bit more rum. Prancer had both. And so it was done. Or was it? “Boys.” We can’t put this out unless we master this dillio!!” Loel exclaimed frantically, crying. “Why the tears Loel?” Prancer asked.

“Cause I don’t want this to end Prancer! Can’t you see? This rocks!”

“It’s immense Campbell” Prancer said. “And I know just the man to master this thing. It’s gonna get heavier. We’ll be back soon. Maybe not next year, as you might have guessed we are pretty busy… But we’ll squeeze it in at some point. Come on! You gotta fat track outta this, and some eggnog.. and a tree.. and a clean jam space.. and some rum. Enjoy it. We got some real cool company for a few hours. What a treat! We had a blast! Say hello to all your friends on your site. Post it up.” There were more tears, joyful tears and hugs, and with that they all floated out through the window and into the snowy ether. They had things to do. Thanks Rudy & Prance for all your help. Thanks Harris Newman for the fast & great mastering job so short notice.

Happy Holidays!!

Things I like and am thinking about now and vague reasoning for/association these things call to mind. I have two minutes:

Starbucks [Ok, I’ll admit it]

People who jog [I admire their guts for things they wear, especially the latexy shaped to body stuff- spacey]

Sit-ups [C+C Music Factory]

Grapes [Seeds, but not too many seeds if that makes any sense]

Leaves [The Autumn noun kind, not the verb necessarily]

Just Us – Barrington Street Halifax

Walt Whitman, his poetry definitely but also even just his name.

Montreal right now.

Meats N Cheese     8

Camo Bling            7

Andd the winner is*… after 2 & ½ hours of pure grit badminton bliss/ intensity*… MEATS N CHEESE

A little disclaimer/update of sorts on the proceedings, to give those who have maybe not been paying as close attention as we like to think you are in our dreams…

The series was deadlocked at 7 matches a piece. As this is the last day of the recording, there had to be a victor at the end of the day. We decided the best way to finish the series was to do one best 6 of 11 match.

With Camo Bling up 4-2 mid way through the proceedings things were not looking great for the MNC. A quick switch in strategy though [Paul & Tony changed sides, took deep breaths, ate chocolate] in game 7, proved to be a good move as the MNC won the next 4 of 5 matches, with a Mr. Fridmann presiding over the last game to ensure fair play.

MEATS N’ CHEESE!!!

The pot was set at $50. Meats N’ Cheese will spend the money well [maybe to pick up some salad for their vegetable/wholesomeness in our nutrition depleted diet] .Thanks to all the people who have posted or “liked” or heck, even “loved” this. We know we’re damn good at this sport, but the extra support gave us the strength to power through. Okee.. More on the recording in a couple days. This deserves its own post!!

Thanks Tony for all the fun and [oh yeah!!] the lovely recording too. Safe travels.

Wow. A lot has transpired since the last post. 3 tracks done, Loel & Tim shot a couple guns & a whole lotta badminton^. We have thought about our skills at this lovely sport, the development of our collective overall skill set over the course of the time that we started, and we have decided that while we haven’t really improved in any athletic sense, the games have “almost certainly gotten more aggressive” [I think this is the beginning point in any search to become pro in whatever sport one might try his pro luck at?]. I digress.

A little update: Three tracks tentatively, respectively titled “Martyr,” “Rapture” and “Papa Time”. Working on song 4, which doesn’t really have a title yet. Will eat some peanut butter cookies*, play a little badminton, drink a little milk or water or Sledgehammer & get back to you on that one. Actually there is a tentative title for it, but I think I will wait til the next post to reveal!! Oh the Suspense, capital S. Muhahaha!!

Oh yeah, Badminton update. Almost forgot. Meats N Cheese up 6-3^^. There is a $10 wager on every match. Usually a best 2 out of 3 dealy. As I said, we’re still pretty much as good or bad as we used to be, but definitely some more aggression happening. I don’t really know why you’d want to see this thinking on it now, but we filmed a bunch and might stick it up here at some point, unless there is some serious objection from anyone who frequents this page. Okay. “Das ist alles” or “Dat’s it” in Canada speak. Stay tuned.

^Our friend/soundman/tour manager Donny Cooper came down for a couple days with a rental car, mini pizzas & a pack of Sleemans, tracked some shakers & BVs, drank/shared said Sleeman’s, hung out in the general way that friends hang out at these things, and also grabbed some mean badminton footage.  That will be up soon.

*I found out today that PB cookies make me happier in general. Like, if I’m in a bad mood & someone shows up with peanut butter cookies, my spirits will hop a bit [my spirit hops].

^^ The picture says 5-2 but make no mistake it is 6-3 now. YYYYesss!

> Tim shaved his beard sort of & Loel & Tim shot a gun for the first or third time in their lives. Paul was scared of hearing damage and/or of being shot, so he went inside.

Round 2. Song 1. Mmmh..

Tracked tentatively titled “Rapture” today. Neat developmentS. Tracked drums & gits. Played some badminton. L & T [otherwise known as Team Camo-Bling] defeated Tony “Richard” Rock & P of The Meats & Cheese in a swift 4 games to tie up the series at 1-1.

Might have to head up to the Shure Fine for some peanut butter, though I’m not sure what that has to do with tracking or badminton. Shure Fine is the Cassadaga source for groceries, smokes, brewskis, fire crackers, rifles, Hi-Vis vests, & oversize Cassadaga Cougar pajama pants. Just so you know.

That is about it in Wintersleep world. We’ve posted some photos below. We are gonna maybe do some more guitars tonight, and then watch some Jersey Shore. Or not. Or maybe actually yes. Yeah buddy.
